• Introducing Baby Foods

Many new moms wonder what foods should be introduced at what age.

Here’s a quick list of what can be offered according to age.
0-4 months – Only breast milk (with vitamin D supplement) or Commercial formula (no supplements)
4 months – iron-enriched infant cereal (rice, oatmeal, barley, mixed, in that order)
5 months – pureed vegetables and pureed fruits (Remember to try each newly introduced food for 3-5 days to make sure that there’s no allergic reaction!)
6 months – dried breads, crackers, etc.
7 months – pureed meat and alternates (beans, peas, lentils, etc.) and egg yolks (no whites!)
8 months – mashed “family” foods without sugar, butter, margarine, or seasonings like salt, spices, herbs
10 months – finger foods such as fruit and vegetable pieces, toast
12 months – whole undiluted milk
    * Nuts should not be introduced before 2 years of age.
    * Breastfed babies can be solely breastfed for the first 6 months, andthen start on infant cereal. (They really don’t need it until then.)
